The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BCE, when the last king of Rome was expelled from the city. During the Roman Republic the territories of Rome were ruled and governed by the Senate, who oversaw and set military, cultural, religious, building policies.

The Roman Republic existed for 482 years.

The Roman Republic was replaced with the Roman Empire in 27 BCE when Augustus (Octavian) was granted extraordinary powers by the Roman Senate.
